"Groovin on a Moonbeam" presents a weathered bassist mid-groove — striped cap, dark shades, and a white beard rendered with patient layering against a smoky plum field punctuated by warm Indian yellow splatters. The contrast between the cool, muted figure and the luminous background gives the composition a quiet, jazz-club intensity. This painting is not about total realism. Like all my work its about a feeling. Where the subject is emotionally. It’s where it takes you and how it makes you feel when you ponder over it for a minute.
I started with a burnt sienna underpainting, then built up thin glazes to get the beard’s texture and the instrument’s deep tones. Getting hue, saturation and color temp right was key… the Indian yellow drips were added by throwing paint at the canvas to break the formality and add motion. Acrylic on canvas (20”H x 20”W x 0.75”D).
